FORMING CHARACTER SHAPING LIVES

It sounds very dry, but RoSET is anything but!

The Rotary Club of Sidcup Educational Trust ( R.O.S.E.T. ) was set up in 1985 as a registered charity (No. 293030) with the aim of making financial grants to young people who live, are being educated, or work in Sidcup who wish to pursue educational and character forming projects. The grants are based on the candidate's financial or special needs and usually result in rewarding experiences such as travel to far way places. Ideally there is fun involved too!

During this, our 75th year, we hope to build up the fund so that we can provide still more grants over a wider geographical area and your support for our fund raising activities would be invaluable. We also seek your help in promoting the fund to young people, up to 25 years, who would benefit from participating in this type of activity particularly those from a disadvantaged background who would not normally apply. If you know someone for whom RoSET would make a difference please put them forward. For more information or an application form email: roset@rotary-sidcup.org or contact Dr Norman Hamblyn. Tel 01322 861936. Alternatively an application form can be downloaded by clicking on the link in “How to Apply for a RoSET Award” below.

Jade’s Story

I successfully auditioned for Youth Music Theatre UK in 2007. However, I was unable to complete the 2 week course in Belfast costing £775, unless I could find sponsorship. So when I applied to the RoSET Award, and they gave me £500 towards my course fees, I was delighted. Without the help of RoSET I would have not been able to go. The course was a project called 'OH! Carol’. For 2 weeks we rehearsed the songs, acting scenes, and dances that came together as a production which we performed in a professional theatre in Belfast on the last day of the course. The experience was sensational. Not only did I have the time of my life, but I learnt a considerable amount of new skills directly related to the performing industry. Currently I am training at Performers College on a full scholarship, and hope to earn jobs on Cruise Ships, and in the West End. The new skills and experience of YMT UK made a huge contribution to my current position in helping me towards achieving the career I have always dreamed of. Without the help of the RoSET Award, I would not have had that experience. I cannot thank you enough for what you did for me.

Case History

Explorer Scout Richard H received an award from ROSET to help him attend a World Scout Jamboree in Thailand. In a talk to Sidcup Rotary Club members, Richard described his experiences and explained how much the ROSET award had meant to him.

"Thanks to ROSET I was able to raise sufficient funds to represent Sidcup District at the World Scout Jamboree - a trip of a lifetime and a wonderful experience."

Case History

Tom P, now at Birmingham University reading African Studies with Development Studies, whose undertaking was to spend 10 months in Tanzania on a Health Education Programme under the auspices of Student Partnership World Wide, acknowledged the support he received from ROSET. He described his trip as "...an amazing and rewarding experience."

Case History

Rebecca, a pupil at a Sidcup School and also an Explorer Scout, was given a ROSET award to help her take part in a World Challenge Expedition to Honduras in. Expressing her thanks to ROSET (which she had heard about at her school), and everyone who had contributed to her fund raising, Rebecca described her expedition as "...an opportunity of a lifetime"

These are often once in a life time opportunities or may well have an impact on future career and life choices. Many local young people have already benefited from financial support from the Trust and have returned from their travels with extraordinary experiences and many happy memories.

How to Apply for a Roset Award

Applications should, wherever possible, be submitted by the Head of School, Youth Organisation, Club or Employer (but not the candidate’s parent). Candidates seeking funds from several sources for a major project may apply on their own behalf providing that full sponsorship details with a confidential letter are submitted.

An application form is available by emailing  roset@rotary-sidcup.org or you can download and print out a PDF version by clicking here.

Note: PDF - portable document format - files are normally readable on most types of computer. Recent browsers can open them directly when you click on the file name. However, to save the file, right click and select 'save target as'. If your browser cannot directly display the file, you can download a free PDF Reader from the Adobe website. Please print the form out and return it to the address that is on it.

Who Can Apply?

Candidates of either gender must normally be between 15 and 25 years of age. However in exceptional cases applicants will be considered outside this age range. Young people who have special needs can also apply subject to agreement with the organisation running the course or project. At present grants are available to young people who live, are being educated, or work in Sidcup but we hope widen the area in the near future.

Confidential comments of the supporting or sponsoring person are of particular importance and must be supplied in all cases.

The main objective of the scheme is to provide a challenge and experience for young people who might otherwise not have such an opportunity. The fact that a person is likely to benefit from a challenging course is unlikely, in itself, to be adequate justification unless it can be shown that there are additional factors to support the candidate's selection. These would include the financial, family and social circumstances of the candidate.

ROSET awards generally range from £200 to £500 and each application will be considered on an individual basis.

What if I am Successful?

Successful applicants will be expected to submit, after the event, a brief statement as to its success or otherwise and how they have benefited personally. If the event is cancelled or the applicant is unable to attend, a full refund of the bursary will be expected.

Important Information

The Trustees reserve the rights to refuse any application without giving reasons for their decision which shall be deemed final.
