District 1120 RI Club No 19449
Founded 1935

On Saturday 19th March a concert, a showcase for talented young local musicians, was held at St John's the Evangelist Church, Sidcup. "The Bexley's got Talent" was a grand musical extravaganza promoted by our club in collaboration with Bird College to celebrate our 75th anniversary year and raise money for local charities.
The performances by the young singers and musicians were of an extremely high standard and were warmly applauded by a large audience. Invited guests included: Cllr. The Mayor Val Clark, James Brokenshire MP and Rotary District Governor John Dunkley. The programme was varied and included performances by brass and flute ensembles, individual singers and a choir.
The Rotary Brass Ensemble opened the proceedings giving a remarkable performance considering that they had only played together the first time in rehearsals that afternoon.
Next on was the choir which is open for all to join with no discrimination as to age or ability and under the enthusiastic leadership of James Wilkinson gave a remarkable performance.
Ayre Flutes, a contemporary flute ensemble, from Trinity College of Music gave a remarkable performance. The Bird College Higher and Further Education Students then entertained with medleys of songs brilliantly performed.
The Bird College Trio comprising Eamonn Cox, violin, Natalie Hancock, cello and Elaine Yau, piano played three pieces. They were all finalists in last year's Bexley Young Musician of the Year competition organised by all the Rotary clubs in the area. Eamonn won the competition which is a biannual event.
Our President David Barker, said “the intention of arranging the concert was not simply to raise money for worthy causes but to celebrate the wealth of talent among those who live work or study in the area, particularly the young”. He went on to say, "our young people are often criticised and get a bad press. It is good to be able to redress the balance on occasions such as this and to applaud the dedication, discipline and sheer hard work that is necessary to achieve the standards we have witnessed tonight".
The concert was rounded off with a performance by the Little Big Band, led by Dave McAllister, that nearly blew the roof off the church! They played jazz standards such as "Birdland", "Fly Me to the Moon" and ended with "In the Mood".
