The flags were waving and the band was playing at Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School in celebration of the successes and sacrifices of the Battle of Britain at this, its 71st Anniversary. For the fourth year running the club organised this nostalgic event which was enjoyed by 253 people on the evening of Saturday 17th September, as they were entertained by the Greenwich Concert Band, lead by its musical Director, Chris Lloyd.

Further musical entertainment was provided by Shane Hamshier who is fast becoming a well-known celebrity locally and nationally. His powerful voice with Big Band back-up was very much enjoyed by all.

The Greenwich Concert Band’s repertoire was all-encompassing again this year. One of the highlights was an exciting ‘Post Horn Gallop’ and the many other orchestrations were memorable.

The wide range of music catered for all tastes creating an emotional atmosphere at times. Everyone enjoyed their ‘indoor picnics’ with the decor of Union Jacks and bunting as the evening progressed to a ‘last Night of the Proms’ finale.

Beneficiaries which shared the proceeds of about £2,800 included the Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice and its Lymphoedema care self-help group, C.A.M.E.L. (Care and Massage Eases Lymphoedema).
